About Te Roopu Taurima O Manukau Trust

Te Roopu Taurima O Manukau Trust originated from the old Mangere Hospital where many clients were institutionalised in a system that proved inappropriate and insensitive to Maori.

In August 1992, concerned employees organised hui (meetings) journeying up and down the country asking whanau what they wanted for their intellectually disabled mokopuna. It was a time consuming process, but it became clear that an independent kaupapa Maori service that identified the needs of Maori mokopuna was required.

What makes us different

Being kaupapa Maori basically means making a difference in the lives of mokopuna surrounding them with a caring environment based on Maori values of respect and whanau (family). As a kaupapa Maori service, we have practices which encourages wellbeing although we are based on Maori culture and values, we accept and value all cultural practices, inviting mokopuna to maintain their own cultural traditions and values alongside tikanga.
