About Kapiti Dizziness and Balance Centre
I started my Physiotherapy clinic from my home in Raumati Beach in November 2015 after specialising in treating patients with neurological conditions for over 25 years and vestibular conditions for over 16 years in the public health system. My clinic consists of a clinic room and a gym in a private setting with ample off street parking space. My main areas of practice are:
Vestibular Rehabilitation: The assessment and treatment of people with vertigo, dizziness and balance problems. These can be from a number of causes including inner ear problems, stroke and other neurological conditions, decreased vestibular function due to aging and dizziness caused by anxiety. I use specialised infra-red video goggles to help with diagnosis. I have treated over 2000 people with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) alone.
Neurological Rehabilitation: I work with people who have had a stroke and been discharged from the hospital system, people with Parkinson's Disease who need help maintaining or initiating an exercise programme and people with other neurological conditions with balance and mobility problems and/or dizziness .
Elderly who have balance problems, falls or fear of falling.
I also do home visits if required.
First Assessments usually take 1 hour to complete and follow-up appointments are for 30 minutes.
I also work one day/fortnight in the Neurology Department at Wellington Public Hospital doing Vestibular Function Testing. I have a close working relationship with the Neurologists who I can seek advice from when required.
Since 2006 I have been teaching 2-day Vestibular Rehabilitation Introductory Courses to other Physiotherapists in NZ. Since 2011 I have been teaching 2-day Advanced Courses in Vestibular Rehabilitation.
I have been involved in a number of research studies to do with Vestibular disorders. I completed my Masters of Health Sciences endorsed in Rehabilitation from Otago University in 2009. My research thesis was on Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) and has since been published in the Journal of Clinical Neuroscience. Other completed research is being prepared for publication.
I am a member of Physiotherapy NZ, our professional society, and am on the committee of the New Zealand Society for Balance, Dizziness and Vertigo Inc. This is a multidisciplinary scientific society that holds annual scientific meetings to improve knowledge for clinicians working with patients suffering from these symptoms.
I have attended and presented at numerous conferences nationally and internationally and completed post-graduate training in Vestibular Rehabilitation in the USA in 2004 and 2007.
What makes us different
I am one of the most experienced Physiotherapists in the country in the specialty area of vestibular rehabilitation (dizziness and vertigo). Physiotherapy treatments for certain causes of dizziness and vertigo are very successful with good evidence based research to back them up. I keep up with the latest research in this area by regularly attending conferences and reading research articles.
