There has to be a fundamental change to the Kiwi mind set when it comes to housing. We in New Zealand like to achieve this by heating only one room in the home, normally with a wood burner or heat pump and then retiring to a cold damp bedroom at night. This old fashioned method of home heating has contributed to New Zealand having one of the highest rates of childhood respiratory illnesses in the developed world, this is not an accolade that we in New Zealand should accept. We should encourage or perhaps demand that our architects, builders and planners specify and build to maximum standards rather than minimum standards of home insulation, heating, windows, doors and energy efficiency. Ultimately, if the building industry fails to embrace new methods and standards that are normal practices in other countries, then the Government of the day needs to legislate to make it law.
